2019 Piya Maharaj Day (King Rama V Day)

King Chulalongkorn was only 15 years old when he ascended the throne. He reigned over Siam (Thailand) as Rama V for 42 years from 1868-1910. He transformed Siam from a backward Asian land to a modern 20th Century kingdom. His reign was truly a "revolution from the throne." When King Chulalongkorn assumed power, Siam had no schools, roads, railways, hospitals or well-equipped military forces. To achieve the enormous task of modernization, he brought in foreign advisors and sent his sons and other young men abroad for education. It is no wonder that King Chulalongkorn was posthumously named Piya Maharaj, "the Beloved Great King." October 23rd is Piya Maharaj Day in Thailand. The Thai Buddhists of South Florida will come together to pay respect to King Chulalongkorn on Sunday October 13, 2019. The schedule is as follows:

03:00-5:00 PM Meditation lessons
06:00 PM Monks and public perform evening chant and end the ceremony for King Rama V
